Switched-Capacitor Multilevel Inverters: A Comprehensive Review

Multilevel inverters (MLIs) with switched-capacitor (SC) units have been a widely rehearsed research topic in power electronics since the last decade. Inductorless/transformerless operation voltage-boosting feature and inherent capacitor self-voltage balancing performance reduced electromagnetic interference make SC-MLI an attractive converter over other available counterparts for various applications. There many developed structures recently put forward, where different basic switching techniques are used to generate multiple (discrete) output voltage levels. In general, priority of topological development is motivated by number levels, overall gain, full dc-link utilization, while reducing component counts stress on devices better efficiency density. To facilitate direction future SC-MLIs, this article presents comprehensive review, critical analysis, categorization existing topologies. Common fundamental generalized summarized their merits demerits. Ultimately, major challenges directions outlined leading technology roadmap more practical
